AFTER I had posted it off. I am sorry if this causes too much inconvenience. Since most of the positive comments I have received on Graf 1.4.2 are about the potential uses for Publish and Subscribe features I felt it was important to fix things right away, even though they are relatively minor bugs. The attached is a self extracting archive of Graf 1.4.3 which is intented to REPLACE 1.4.2. Hopefully before 1.4.2 reaches the archives. Many thanks ralph sutherland ----------------------------------------------------------------- This file contains the latest release of Graf v1.4.3, a Scientific X-Y plotting application. This version has Publish and Subscribe when run under system 7. A non-standard, automatic pulshing feature allows Graf to add interactive plotting facilities to any app that can publish and Subscribe. Many of the user interface elements have been changed on the basis of user's comments and some of the new features are the direct result of user email conversations. This version fixes many 'features' in the Graf 1.3.1 release and some long standing omissions, like coloured symbols have at last been implemented. The interface makes better use of a colour display if present. Graf will work under system 6.0.2 or newer on a 1MB MacPlus or better. It has even been tested on a Quadra 950 with A/UX 3.0 (sigh) for ~ 5 minutes until it was taken away from me!. This software is Freeware. Needleman <5257779@MCIMAIL.com> Subject: Compression/transparency pitfalls Over on Prodigy, I've been participating in a debate on the importance of the More Disk Space conflict with StuffIt. It only arises when you try to add an MDS-compressed file to a StuffIt archive and, says one side, only an idiot would do that. The other side (mine) points out that, due to transparency, users will simply forget that their files are MDS-compressed. I was indeed wise to point this out <g>--but I didn't know I had already fallen into a similar trap myself. About ten days ago I obtained a copy of the new FileTyper 3.2 version and, after trying it out, sent it on to the archives. Yesterday I got a few e-mail messages asking what the format of the file was. I figured the upload had arrived corrupted. But no--when I downloaded the .hqx file from the archives and dehqx'ed it, I wound up with an application of type "APPL" and creator "alyS" which self-extracted when I clicked upon it. Anyway, to make a long story short (although it is indeed a bit too late for that), it turned out that the file in the archives actually dehqx'ed into an autodoubler-compressed diskdoubler file. I have autodoubler installed, so the format was totally transparent to me. (I've uploaded a proper version of the same file; if you downloaded the original, just decompress it by info-mac/util/ddexpand-373.hqx.) How did this happen? The file downloaded by me from AOL was a More Disk Space self-extracting format file. This new file format from Alysis is not on the exception list of AutoDoubler. So AutoDoubler, which is sensible enough to leave Stuffit or DiskDoubler or Compactor programs alone, just compressed the MDS.sea program as part of its usual scavenging routine in the background, unbeknownst to me. Although I have AD set to leave alone files that were modified less than 3 days ago, the file was compressed at once. Why? I had just downloaded it! But of course the file itself carried a last modified date of more than 3 days ago, although I had just added it to my disk. This didn't explain why AD's transparency feature didn't decompress the file when I created an .hqx file. It should have expanded the file when binhex or Eudora called for it. And then I remembered how I created the file. I access the net through a dial-up connection using MacTCP. I found that if I had Eudora binhex a file on the fly, I'd get time-out errors on long uploads. So I've gotten in the habit of binhexing first and attaching that file to my upload. As it happened, I was using Compact Pro, so just used the "Create BinHex 4.0 document" option of Compact Pro (under the Misc menu) on that file. But Compact Pro is on the exception list of AD! So AD did not expand the file when the .hqx version was created. So the reconstituted version of that .hqx file is really an AD-compressed file, and that's what got uploaded. (This last sentence courtesy of my Dept. of Redundancy Dept.) To avoid these kinds of problems, I have two workarounds: Cheap workaround--think about what's happening and remember the pitfalls. Best workaround--buy a larger disk and toss out any "transparent" compression program. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 9 Jun 92 18:16:23 PDT From: mclagan@sfu.ca (Scott McLagan) Subject: Dead mice A bunch of our Mac Plus mice have packed it in. I had a Mac with an Apple 19" Monochrome tube, and just got a second monitor, an Apple 13" color. Apple's architecture that lets you drop in a second video card and reboot, and use the monitor right away, is BEAUTIFUL. The elegance of the Monitors control panel and the absence of teeny little switches or arcane configuration options is Right. On a PC, it would take weeks to figure out how to do it, and then at least a day of frustrating trial and error to install and configure. But there are some problems. The first one is that the 19" display jiggles when the 13" is next to it. It's a constant, eystrain-inducing wiggle on the side of the screen near the other monitor. (The monitor cases are about 5" apart.) If I need to use the big monitor for anything much, I have to turn off the little one. In addition, there are software problems with some applications. Some programs, such as NIH Image, require a color primary monitor, so I gave the color monitor the menu bar. Then I found that other applications, such as Aldus Persuasion 2.0, size their windows depending on the size of the primary monitor, so I couldn't make a big window on the big tube, so I put it back. Persuasion and SuperPaint 2.0a both froze the machine when I dragged a window from the b/w to the color tube, and several other commercial applications crashed or froze the Mac. Try before you buy! This will print just fine when sent to a printer. Unfortunately, unless you take measures to adjust the content of your postscript files, this will result in repeat occurences of the AppleDict and perhaps some fonts and the TrueType dictionary as well. The fie can get huge easily. The main advatage of this method is that it applies to all postscript files, not just those generated by WORD. You can combine the output from several programs. If you have a macro-writing ability such as in Nisus or QUED/M, you could concievably write a script that will strip repeat occurences of dictionaries and fonts and also move the flush commands to the end of the file. Then you would have a much more compact version of the file which should (cross-fingers) print faster. By the way : I really wish application writers would rewrite their print-files -from-Finder routines. From what I know of Apple's guidelines from the various mac programming books I have, this is somewhat left up to the programmer. What seems to typically happen is that they totally neglect the case where you might want to print multiple files to postscript files instead of sending them all to a printer. Thus they only present a Print Dialog for the first file and NO MATTER WHETHER YOU CHOOSE PRINTER OR POSTSCRIPT FILE FOR THAT ONE, they then send ALL the rest of the files to the printer! If any of you do not believe me, just select several files while in the finder, then select the Print command. When the Print dialog comes up, click on Postscript File and watch what happens. I raised this point once before. Am I the only one who finds this annoying? I would like the following behavior: 1-option to have Print Dialog options apply to all subsequent files in selection. 2-option to have individual Print Dialogs for each file. 3-option to have all files' output merged into single postscript file. These don't seem like unreasonable requests to me. My apologies! Here's the article from #123... cheers ... Adam C. Engst, TidBITS Editor QuicKeys Line Enhanced by CE --------------------------- by Mark H. Anbinder -- TidBITS Contributing Editor CE Software has been in the press quite a bit lately, and deservedly so. The latest piece of news out of West Des Moines, Iowa, is that CE has announced two new pieces in the QuicKeys product line, one of which will ship later this month. QuicKeys is CE's macro product for the Macintosh, allowing users to customize and largely automate their work environment by assigning frequently-used or "menial" operations to one-or-two- keystroke commands. Version 2.1.2, scheduled to ship on 20-May-92, is 32-bit clean, System 7 savvy, and supports Apple Events of all kinds. This latest version also offers improved compatibility with Microsoft Word 5.0 and other minor changes. The additions to the family are Instant QuicKeys and QuicKeys Runtime. The former is a new installation and modification application that leads users through a process that automatically sets up dozens of useful QuicKeys without having to use the regular QuicKeys editor. With Instant QuicKeys, which will ship in the box with QuicKeys 2, CE says they no longer have just a "power user's" product, but a product that will cater to all levels of Mac user. Instant QuicKeys will also allow users to set up on-screen palettes of "SoftKeys" containing up to ninety frequently-accessed macros, accessible through a single keystroke or by clicking on the screen. An additional application, QKIcons, will allow users to create icons that can invoke any QuicKey with a single click. The icons can be placed on the desktop or in any folder for easy location and use. This last feature is reminiscent of Tiles, CE's "intelligent desktop" product, which hasn't done as well in the marketplace as the company would have liked. One of the features of Tiles is that a QuicKey can be assigned to a tile, which resides within the program's windows or can be dragged out to float over the desktop. The program is an application launcher and desktop organizer, but users have complained of a confusing interface and excessive memory requirements, and many prefer to accomplish the same tasks with simpler, less-expensive utilities. QuicKeys Runtime, for which a shipping date and price are not yet set, is a runtime version of QuicKeys that will allow system managers, consultants, or value-added resellers (VARs) to create customized sets of QuicKey macros and install them for users who won't need to modify them or create their own. We hope that CE will elect to price the runtime package at an affordable level that will enable large workgroups to afford to share in QuicKeys's benefits without the extra expense. Since the product is obviously aimed at workgroups and larger installations, it would make sense for CE to offer quantity pricing, as they do with QuickMail, their flagship electronic mail product. Five, ten, fifty, and one hundred user packages would make sense. Current QuicKeys 2 users will be able to upgrade to version 2.1.2, including Instant QuicKeys, for $30, and users of versions prior to 2.0 will be able to upgrade for $49. Users who are interested in upgrading from 2.1 to 2.1.2 without getting Instant QuicKeys, SoftKeys, or QKIcons may download an updater utility from various online services, or may obtain an update disk from CE for $15. Users who purchased QuicKeys after 01-Apr-92 will be able to upgrade to 2.1.2 (with Instant QuicKeys) for free. International users should contact their local distributors, or call CE customer service at 515/224-1995. FullWrite Professional is a word processor that renumbers, re-references, anything under the sun. There are plenty of drawbacks to the programme, the biggest one is that it is pretty much in the deceased catagory, but I have not found anything better for this purpose. I would rather put up with its minor shortcomings than have to manually renumber and re-reference everything. I was saved endless frustration when I added in an extra Figure to the middle of my text while working under a deadline. I did not have to worry about searching through the text and remembering when to change the numbers etc. I just added the Figure and FWP did the rest.... WHY CANT ANYONE ELSE INCORPORATE THIS ESSENTIAL FEATURE IN THEIR PROGRAMME? That is a really good question... ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 9 Jun 92 09:42:41 +0200 From: Georg.Denk@MATHEMATIK.TU-MUENCHEN.DBP.DE Subject: Rebuilding the desktop of external hard disk Dear net, I would like to know how to rebuild the desktop of an external hard disk (you see: System 6!). I've been reading all the recent postings about repeating bibliographic input and footnoting in Microsoft Word, and it seems that one basic thread is that academic customers are being treated like second class citizens. Playing Devil's Advocate for the moment, I'd ask: Is there any profit in adding new features purely for academia? With the deep discounts typical at educational institutions (Well, at least here in the USA), maybe Microsoft and other developers don't see enough potential profit from additional academic sales to expend the effort. After a momentary power outage my IIsi refused to power on. I thought sure a surge had fried it, but it turned out the PRAMs were simply trashed so that it didn't know enought to turn on. The fix was briefly removing the battery (obviously the usual PRAM-zap routine wouldn't work because I couldn't turn it on to do it). This cost me $37.95 to learn. The repairman says it's rare, but it's worth a try if your Mac suddenly goes belly-up. Unless, of course, you're one of those poor souls with a soldered-in battery. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 9 Jun 92 13:09:49 WET DST From: Ian C McCall <csc345@central1.lancaster.ac.uk> Subject: SIMMs x 8 or SIMMs x 9? Here is what I've found so far... Late Friday night I ejected a disk from the drive in my IIcx and it got stuck midway through the release. This happened once before, so I knew to get a paperclip and tried to release it. No good. At this point, I knew what a bad idea it is to try to force the disk, so I didn't. NOTE #1 - Don't DON'T try to force the disk. Even if you think it'd be simple to do. It WILL cost you money. I powered the machine down, and began to disassemble it. I found that the IIcx comes apart surprisingly easily. Take the cover off. Disconnect power cables. Disconnect all plugs, adb, serial, video etc. Blow the dust out. (If you've had the drive more than a couple of weeks there will be plenty.) Disconnect the hard drive data cable and power cable. Depressing the catches on both sides of the drive, lift the hard drive basket and place aside. The power supply slides up and away from the motherboard, where it is tied in with a single Molex connector. Pull it up from underneath (go slowly). Once it is removed, use a Phillips screwdrive to remove the screw from the disk plastic housing. Disconnect the FDHD cable at the disk drive. Depress the catch on the housing and remove the housing. Turn the housing over to reveal the disk drive. Two screws in the back sides of the housing secure the FDHD. Remove these. Remove the drive from the housing by slightly bending the plastic outward. Careful! The drive sits in a cage - remove the screws holding it and remove the cage. What you are left with is the drive. At this point - I must have damaged something - probably the head. I thought I was being careful when I extracted it. Oh well. Turns out the the mechanism, a Sony, is manufactured exclusively for Apple and only Apple sells the replacements. This means that most street prices are about $300. I then looked into repair. I found the following places willing to repair - 1. MiproIII - as recommended by people on America Online. $125 for any repair. They sold their floppy repair unit to a company called ERC, at (510)416-1113. $125 + shipping and handling. The technician there said that these drives are EXTREMELY prone to the head assembly getting bent or broken, making them useless. This looks like the best place to get fixed. Also, 2. Shreve Systems (800)227-3971. They won't fix - replace $289. 3. Quadmation (800)733-7887. Any repair, $197. This didn't seem like much of a deal. 4. Falcon Microsystems, Landover, MD. Government reseller, will fix for $75/hour plus parts. (At least the same as a new unit.) 5. I also called some places in the back of MacWorld/MacUser. None will fix for less than $150. Dan Lunderville of Wisconsin also suggested the following places - 6. MicroMat Computer Systems 7075 Redwood Blvd. - Warehouse 4 Novato, CA 94947 (800) 829-6227 7. Soft Solutions 907 River Rd., Suite #98 Eugene, OR 97404 (503) 461-1136 voice (503) 461-2005 FAX 8. G.E. Repair Services 3400-M De La Cruz Blvd. Santa Clara, CA 95054 (800) 933-4962 (800) WE-FIX-MACS 9. Pre-Owned Electronics 205 Burlington Road Bedford, MA 01730 (800) 274-5343 10.Microdoc Eugene, OR (503) 344-5335 I eventually ordered a new Applied Engineering AE HD external floppy for $229 >From MacConnection. It has a number of nice features that improve upon Apple's external unit, including a combo red/green LED to indicate write/read. But I still find myself sticking disks into the internal, and getting the awful "Not a Mac disk - Initialize?" message. So I'll be getting the internal fixed at ERC. Some more notes - I looked at the mechanism for the FDHD in a Sun SPARCstation. It appears to be near the same unit, but the model numbers were different, as well as enough circuit board differences to convince me that it wouldn't work as a replacement. I also read through the DEAD MAC SCROLLS, a book by Larry Pina that discusses repair. Very informative. Unfortuanately it also said the heads would have to bereplaced. In messages from America Online, I learned that the IIcx and the IIci are VERY prone to FDHD breakage, mostly because of the fan drawing dust through the floppy slot and mechanism on its way out the back. One man said that of the eight IIcx he purchased for an office, seven of the floppy disks went bad withinthe first year. There were numerous mail messages complaining about breakage, stuck disks, etc., with these models. The best thing you can do to prevent this happening to you is to keep the drive clear of dust and dirt, and keep the slot covered when not being used. There were enough disgruntled people with IIcx/ci's that they wanted to complain ala MODE32 to get Apple to acknow- ledge guilt and repair them (on AOL). I've learned a lot about motorized floppy drives in the past few days. I hope that some of this can help you. Thanks everyone for the advice and suggestions. - Gary Goldberg og@access.digex.com Bowie, MD KA3ZYW ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 8 Jun 1992 21:50:34 PDT From: Mike_Spreitzer.PARC@xerox.com Subject: Undeletable folder in System 6 Why do I have a folder I can't delete? I can drag it into the trash can. But when I try to Empty Trash, I get an alert saying "The Trash couldn't be emptied (a file was busy or a folder was not empty)." (OK). Of course, the folder *appears* to be empty. "Get Info" from the Finder's File menu says "0 bytes used, 0K on disk, for 0 files". However, DiskTop says "-3 files/folders". Ring any bells? The folder in question is on my hard drive, directly in the folder for the whole drive (although it used to be one level lower down). This state is quite robust. I've done a lot of rebooting, and several rebuilds of the desktop (via option-clover during boot). I'm running System 6.0.7, with Finder 6.1.7. My System folder has a few dozen inits, including InitPicker, which I quickly set to not run any others. At first I had only the initial load of DAs installed in my System file (I normally use SuitcaseII, except when InitPicker or desktop-rebuilding causes it to not run); partway through my exploration of this state I used the Font/DA Mover to move DiskTop into my System file.
